Frequently Asked Questions About TAPOur Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP for short!) or pest control insulation is truly a wonder in that it provides outstanding insulation for your home AND is a natural pest control!

Comprised mostly of recovered newsprint and treated with boric acid, it is incredibly effective and amazingly green!

Also, unlike the traditional “pink” fiberglass insulation often found in your attic and walls, TAP provides a sound barrier to your attic. That’s why we call it our TRIPLE THREAT!

If you are considering TAP for your home, here are some frequently asked questions we think you might find helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is TAP really green?

A: Yes, from production to operation to disposal, cellulose insulation is one of the greenest building products in the world. TAP takes less energy to make than other insulation products, is made from 80%+ recycled paper, and reduces a home’s carbon footprint! It’s definitely green.

Q: Does TAP have to be replaced to continue to control insects?

A: No, pests do not build up a tolerance to the borates in TAP, so the pest control remains effective as long as the insulation is in your home.

Q: How does boric acid kill pests?

A: Boric acid attaches to the bodies of the pests as they come into contact with the insulation. These pests ingest the boric acid when they groom themselves. The pests can’t excrete the boric acid, so it accumulates in the gut eventually leading to dehydration, malnutrition, or both.

Q: How long does installation usually take in an existing home?

A: Installing TAP over existing attic insulation typically takes half a day; however, it ultimately depends on the size of the home.

Q: I already have insulation in my attic, do I need TAP Pest Control Insulation?

A: Most likely! Your current insulation most likely does not have the benefit of built-in pest control, so adding TAP would be helpful.  Additionally, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends a fairly significant amount of insulation (R-49) in residential attics. This amount exceeds most building codes which means that many homes do not have enough insulation.

Q: Does TAP Pest Control Insulation have an odor?

A: No! The boric acid in TAP actually helps absorb and diminish odors.

Q: Do I need to take my existing insulation out before installing TAP Pest Control Insulation?

A: No, TAP can be installed right over existing insulation; however, it may be a good idea to remove the existing insulation if it is excessively damaged by pests.

Q: How is TAP installed?

A: We apply TAP by blowing it into your attic and spraying it into wall voids. It is not cut or trimmed on the job, so there is virtually no waste! Any excess TAP is swept up or vacuumed and fed back into the hopper for re-use. It’s an incredibly efficient process.
