Flea season is upon us

Are you ready for flea season?

What did one flea say to the other?

“Shall we walk, or shall we take the dog?”

And it’s likely your beloved canine has walked those fleas right into your home at one time or another.

Let’s face it—a flea infestation is no fun. And unfortunately, flea season is upon us. Actually, it never really leaves in Florida. There may be a slight reprieve when our “cool” fronts come through, but that really doesn’t eliminate your flea problem.

During late spring and all through summer, most regions of the United States experience outbreaks of fleas. However, fleas do not carry an iPhone and check their calendar. As long as the area is warm enough for them to breed (about 60 degrees or warmer), humid enough for the larvae to hatch (50 percent at least), and a good meal around (i.e. blood), they will continue to exist… oh joy.

Fleas are quite remarkable little creatures. They are the Olympic athletes of the bug world when it comes to jumping.  Their long legs are perfectly designed for jumping. A  flea can jump vertically up to 7 inches (18 cm) and horizontally up to 13 inches (33 cm). This is around 1200 to 2200 times their own body length, making any NBA player green with envy.Flea drawing

And not only are they excellent at jumping, they are excellent at staying alive. And I don’t mean the singing the Bee Gees tune.

These little guys are hard to kill thanks to their hard, polished bodies. The tough body is able to withstand great pressure. But they are not hard to kill for Macy’s Termite and Pest Control!
