Pregnant Women Taking Action Over Zika Concerns

Zika Virus and Pregnancy in FloridaAs new locally-transmitted cases of the Zika virus are appearing in South Florida and elsewhere, concerns over the virus are growing, particularly among pregnant women.

Miami-Dade County appears to be the hardest hit right now along with Palm Beach County, but a new case has recently been reported in Pinellas County.

This virus has been connected to microcephaly and brain damage in newborns born to infected mothers, as well as blindness, deafness, seizures and other defects. In adults, Zika is linked to a form of temporary paralysis, called Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Pregnant women are scrambling to figure out how to deal with this new danger on the horizon. While public health officials report that they do not expect the virus to spread here as it has in other countries due to screened windows, air-conditioning, and rigorous mosquito control measures, pregnant women are still worried and adjusting their daily habits accordingly.

Some expectant moms are choosing to not go outside in order to avoid mosquitoes all together. Others are turning to copious amounts of bug spray, and others are even “considering” moving, albeit temporarily, to a Zika-free zone within the United States.
