Robot Roaches!

Robot Roaches!

According to, fleets of cyborg cockroaches could someday roam into damaged nuclear power plants or collapsed mines to carry out reconnaissance or locate survivors.

Thanks to innovative research, scientists were able to implant live cockroaches with electrodes that stimulate the nerves in the insects’ antennae, thereby allowing them to steer the creatures around like tiny remote-controlled cars.

While you may be thinking remote-controlled roaches are your worst nightmare, this could actually be a good idea! According to the researchers, they, “go anywhere you guide them to,” including places you wouldn’t WANT to go — like radioactive spaces or unstable, collapsed tunnels or mines.

So, how exactly did the scientists do this to the roaches? Great question! The researchers glued tiny backpacks to the backs of discoid* roaches, which were large enough to support them. Each of these backpacks held a micro-controller, wireless transceiver and a battery which allowed the researchers to control their movement.

*A discoid roach (Blaberus discoidales) is a tropical roach from Mexico, Central and South America. Adults grow up to around 2 inches in length. They have wings but are unable to fly. They are a nocturnal species being more active at night and are very shy and skittish when disturbed. They have a life span of around 1 year.

Who knows where this amazing discovery will take us next—perhaps we will be seeing these “Cyborg” roaches in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s newest Terminator film, Terminator Genisys, releasing this summer!

What would you do if you got your hands on a remote-controlled roach?

(Oh, and if you find roaches in your home or place of business — remote-controlled or not — eliminating roaches is one of our specialties!)
