Fun Facts about SpidersYes, you read that headline correctly—there are some fun facts about spiders. Check these out…

All spiders produce silk!

All spiders have something in common: they all spin silk!  In fact, one spider can produce up to seven different KINDS of silk; each of which is utilized for a different purpose, e.g. spinning webs or capturing prey.

One species is (mostly) vegetarian!

While it was previously thought that all spiders were carnivores— capturing and eating other insects—one Central American species has been found to be an herbivore! Bagheera kiplingi says, “Pass the veggies, please!” Actually, it’s more like “please pass the plants” as they eat acacia plants. However, during dry seasons, these spiders are known to resort back to carnivorous ways.

Spiders should wear glasses!

Most spiders have eight eyes, but some, like the brown recluse spider, only have six. But even with all of those eyes, spiders are nearsighted! (They can’t see far away.) But this nearsightedness is not a problem for them; they just wait for prey to get caught in their webs and use silk “trip wires” to warn them of approaching predators.

Female spiders can lay up to 3,000 eggs AT ONE TIME!

Wow, right? That’s a lot of eggs for one spider! Interestingly enough, maternal care varies from species to species. Some females will die shortly after laying eggs; others will carry little bitty spiders on their backs or share their prey with them. True spider love!

Jumping spiders can jump up to 50 times their own length!

Jumping spiders are the Olympic athletes of the spider world. When hunting or trying to escape a predator, jumping spiders are able to move like ninjas! Researchers speculate that this ability comes from an internal hydraulic system, which allows them to alter the pressure of fluids in their legs resulting in a springing motion, incredible!
