We’re pretty excited here at Good News Pest Solutions this week! No, not because the new Spider-Man movie broke a bunch of box office records (although we’re not upset about it either!) Have we mentioned how spiders are natural pest controllers?
No, this week is the time when we celebrate the greatest event of all time. December 25 is the day we decided hundreds of years ago to commemorate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As the Gospel of Luke tells the story, Mary and Joseph made the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the home of Joseph’s family. Unfortunately, lots of people had made the same journey, and when it was time for Mary to give birth, there wasn’t a hospital bed or hotel room available.
So the greatest gift of all mankind, the one who would save us from our sins and ourselves, was born in a humble stable. The king, birthed not in a castle, but in a barn. Not placed in a bassinette with a cute blue cap, but laid in a cattle feeding trough, swaddled in strips of cloth.
His first visitors weren’t family, but some shepherds, who themselves had just seen a miracle - thousands of angels exploding across the fields where they had been tending sheep, praising Yahweh God after telling the hardened men about the baby’s birth.
Some time later, a caravan would arrive at their door, bringing belated birthday wishes to the child, along with gifts of precious gold, frankincense and myrrh.
A lot of fuss made for a little baby born to a carpenter’s wife in a tiny country in the Middle East. But the significance of Jesus’ birth, and his later death would transform the world.
Even if you’ve never heard the story of the baby Jesus, you probably have felt its impact.
Across the United States and Europe we exchange gifts every year around this time. The legends of Santa Claus came from a very real Christian bishop who helped the poor. Our Jewish friends usually celebrate their Hanukkah also in December, and while the tradition of candle-lighting predates Jesus’ birth, they now engage in gift giving as a way to spark the light of joy in their children’s hearts just as it does ours.
Since Christmas Day falls on a Saturday this year, Good News Pest Solutions will be closed on Friday, the 24th so our employees can enjoy a long weekend with their family. It is our earnest prayer that you would seek out a church on Christmas Eve. It’s a blessing to be surrounded by people sharing in the joy of the season and singing carols that celebrate the eve of Christ’s birth.
From all of us at Good News Pest Solutions, may you have a Blessed Merry Christmas!
