Myakka City

Agricultural Touchstone

Myakka City celebrates more than 100 years of Florida agricultural prowess, staying up to date and looking to the future while embracing their past.

Like many of the communities of Charlotte Harbor, the earliest people to see what would someday become Myakka City were the native tribes that roamed the area. In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of our future state. They discovered a group of natives in the area, and unable to pronounce their tribal name, they called the people the Mayacas.

In 1757, a Dutchman named Bernard Romans did the first legal survey of the Charlotte Harbor and surrounding areas while employed by the British government during the French & Indian War. He noted a “Large River” (The Peace River) and a rather unimpressive “New Creek” – what we now call the Myakka River.

The “New Creek” took on many names over the next 100 years, due mostly to a lack of communication and consistency among cartographers (especially those interested in claiming ownership of naming rights). For a while the Peace River was labelled the Miaco, the Myakka then known as the Asternal.

In 1842, William Whitaker, a trader and entrepreneur, having heard stories of the land, moved to the Sarasota area and built a home on the banks of the Myakka River. He began selling salted mullet to Cuban traders.

It wasn’t until 1843, when the Bureau of Topographical Engineers commissioned a map, upon which the river was named Myakka. Deputy Surveyor Sam Reid had learned from the Seminoles that the river was known to their tribe as the Miarca. However his printer arbitrarily changed the spelling to Myakka, and that became its official name.

In the meantime, Whitaker had begun to realize the potential of the land, and in 1847, began importing one of the first cattle herds – the 47 Brand. Soon other settlers began bringing in cattle, setting the stage for the region’s current continued use, including HR Vanderipe, and the Rev. Jessie Wright, whose property would become Plant City.

Sometime in the mid 1860’s, a community north of the tributary where the Peace and Myakka Rivers meet began to form, made up of the ranches of Vanderipe and his son, Whitaker, the Chapins and “Doc” Hough. They built a school that also doubled as the Methodist church, took the name Miakka.

In 1914, with the railroad coming close, the ranches and farms nearby raised their production, and two developers platted out a new section of town closer to the railroad right of way. They established their own post office, sold properties to new settlers and christened it Myakka City. While Myakka City would never grow to the size of other nearby planned communities like Port Charlotte or Lakewood Ranch, it holds a significant role in the history of the Gulf Coast.

Today, Myakka City is made up of cattle ranches, citrus groves, a vineyard, forests, rivers and streams, and despite the name, is unincorporated. Although it is geographically wide, the community is tight-knit – most of the nearly 7000 residents know each other, and they often work together when needed.

Premier Rodent Program - Myakka City, Florida

Keeping the Rodents in the Fields

One issue we see with rapidly growing and developing areas, is that rats, mice and other rodents find themselves ‘homeless,’ and decide to move in to your home—even in the most exclusive homes and neighborhoods.

The Good News Premier Rodent Program is the most comprehensive service available. We start by excluding all known entry points and sealing roof vents with proprietary covers. Then, we set several traps in the attic(s) to kill any rodents sealed in.

Next, we install 4-6 of the best bait stations available in hidden locations around the exterior perimeter. These help to keep the outside population of rodents to a minimum. We check the traps twice per week until we are sure there are no more live rodents inside.

Finally, we vacuum droppings and apply a deodorizer, sanitizer, viruscide to the entire attic space.

Many of our customers are finalizing the process by capping their insulation with T·A·P: Thermal Acoustical Pest Control. Once T·A·P™ is installed, the attic looks brand new and acts as a deterrent to re-infestation.

Term Assure 365 - Myakka City, Florida

Term-Assure 365 - Termite Protection

Our tropical Florida environment means that the state also has the highest risk for termite problems. Termites do more damage than floods, fires and storms combined, and like those natural disasters, the more you prepare the less you feel the impact.

Termite damage isn’t covered by most homeowners policies, which means the repair costs come out of your pocket.

Good News is the leader in using natural and essential oil alternatives to control both drywood and subterranean termite pests.

Term Assure 365 is the most comprehensive and affordable termite protection in the state. First, we perform a thorough inspection of your home to be sure there is no existing evidence of termite infestation.

Next, we perform our initial Perimeter Plus interior and exterior pest control service and install 6-8 termite monitoring stations around the exterior perimeter of your home.

Then every time one of our skilled technicians visits your house (at least once every 4 months), they check the monitoring stations along with the normal treatment. And we offer a $1 million dollar damage repair warranty for homes that qualify.

If you’re building or buying, we offer Bora-Care®, an organic pre-construction treatment, and Florida-mandated real estate WDO inspections, to insure your new home is free of wood destroying organisms.

Don’t wait, schedule your termite inspection now.
