Where Neighbors Become Friends
Sandwiched between Sarasota and Bradenton, not too far from their shared airport sits one of the top golf courses in the entire state of Florida. It’s surrounded by nearly 1300 acres of homes that forms the young community of University Park.
In the late 1970’s, State Senator Pat Neal was introduced to a large swath of land near the Sarasota-Bradenton airport that, at the time was owned by 26 State Farm Insurance Execs, including some of his fellow statesmen. He had developed a burgeoning home building business with his father and was looking to expand into another venture.
Neal connected with Rolf Pasold, an Austrian-born children’s clothing manufacturer who had relocated to England after World War II. In 1974, Pasold sold his company, Ladybird (also the parent company of Woolworths), and moved to the United States and by 1979 had a vision of a grand planned community.

Pasold bought the property and granted Neal’s company the exclusive rights to develop on it. Neal and his son John, who still lives in the area, walked all 1300 acres, marking out where the golf course would be. But the undertaking was larger than Neal had originally expected, and it was almost 10 years before they would be able to establish the community they had dreamed about.
In 1989, the state six-laned the road that would become University Parkway, connecting it to I-75, and the development began in earnest. The first step was clearing he golf course. While Pasold was adamant that future golfers would not feel claustrophobic, closed in by either trees or homes, and that homes would have long sprawling views. However, he also wanted to preserve the trees. So contractors were paid bonuses for trees they relocated, and charged penalties for ones that they had to cut down.
The 27-hole golf course opened and the first homes were sold in 1991, establishing the first three of what would become more than 30 communities of 1,200 homes. As a tribute to his first adopted homeland, Pasold named several of the streets and communities for British landmarks. The community shares schools with Lakewood Ranch.
Like John Neal, Rolf Pasold’s children bought their father’s stake in the development and have stayed in University Park, keeping everything family owned. At present, only about 30 of the homes, now selling for just over a million dollars apiece, are available, and the country club is open to seasonal visitors and non-members for use.
