As America and the world watch the tragic wildfires in Los Angeles, California, it’s hard not to compare these catastrophic events to our own experiences with three major hurricanes in just over two years here on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
On both coasts, thousands of people were displaced, homes and businesses were destroyed, and people from across our great land came together to assist. Thousands of Floridians lost their homeowners insurance – or are still waiting for claims to be paid. Thousands of Californians also lost their insurance in the last couple of years – and experts predict they will have the same issues with companies denying claims.
While some point only to the loss of the extravagant homes of some celebrities and LA power players in one neighborhood, to the East, another 18 square miles of the city still burns, populated by average, every day, hard-working middle-class citizens who have lost everything. It is gratifying to see communities and neighbors cross boundaries, borders, and beliefs to work together to help those in need.
It is heartening to see thousands of people across the country – and even from Mexico, Canada and maybe the Ukraine? – come to assist the people of California. Many of those same people and agencies rushed in to help after Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton ripped through our communities.
Unfortunately, there are only so many resources. Even before the Santa Ana winds drove the blazes in California, FEMA pulled out of the Gulf Coast – despite residents in many fishing and retirement communities still struggling, waiting to rebuild.
The real rebuilding happens after the government and the national charities and far-flung efforts have left the survivors behind. The real rebuilding happens only when the community: our neighbors, friends, and even those we sometimes disagree with, come together and help each other.
Hurricanes, fires, typhoons and the like don’t discriminate between who you voted for, who you worship, whether you go to public or home school, or any of the other divisions we often build walls around. And when tragedy strikes and a neighbor needs help, most everyone will step up and ignore these things too.
The wildlife and insects whose lives are disrupted by natural disasters and our encroachment into their natural habitats don’t discriminate either. They simply seek somewhere they can continue to live.
Even those of us who don’t lose our homes or offices may find they’re now infested by various bugs, animals, and other pests who want a safe place to hide. They don’t care that it’s our home – it’s dry (or wet) and warm and just what they’re looking for.
Whether it’s fires or flooding or just new construction, rodents, ants, roaches, spiders, termites, and more can become a problem for even the most well to do homeowners and renters.
