Happy Easter!

He is risen! He is risen, indeed!

Millions of people across the globe will express this sentiment or similar words in their language to each other on Sunday morning as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

If you are Catholic or more liturgically inclined, we’re in the midst of Holy Week. Today is Maundy or Holy Thursday, commemorating the first communion Jesus shared with his closest followers.

For our Jewish friends, tonight marks the sixth night of Passover. Besides their traditional Seder meal, some will stay up all night studying the Torah in remembrance of the final hours before Pharoah let the Israelites leave Egypt. Many families and synagogues discuss freedom and sing the Dayenu song, reminding themselves that even one blessing “would have been enough.”

Tomorrow is Good Friday. If you attend a church service, it typically ends in the dark, lights and candles extinguished, reflecting the evening Jesus died and was laid in his tomb. Christians honor his sacrifice and mourn his death for a moment, knowing that his return is imminent.

And on Sunday morning, we get up bright and early to praise him for his breaking the bonds of death and freeing us to live forever with him. Yes, there will be eggs and chocolate, jelly beans, and those sweet marshmallow Peeps.

But the real meaning of Easter is how God came to earth in the person of His Son, lived a sinless life among us, then died for us and rose again – giving us the ability to be reconciled to himself. Jesus loved us when we didn’t deserve it and gave everything, even his own life, for us – that’s the Good News!
