It’s been a while since we’ve spent any time discussing the dangers of Zika virus that were so prevalent for the past couple of summers. In fact, back in May, the CDC removed the recommended Zika-related restrictions for people traveling to Florida. However, that doesn’t mean we can let our guard down. Recently, a University of Florida entomologist recommended extra care for residents and visitors of the Sunshine State. Not because of a new Zika outbreak, but because of the higher than normal cases of other mosquito-borne illnesses being diagnosed.
In particular, West Nile Virus, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV, or Triple-E) are being spread by infected mosquitoes throughout the state. There is no vaccine available for West Nile Virus, and most people infected show few to no symptoms, fortunately. However, for the 1 in 150 who does develop a serious reaction, there is no cure and can sometimes be fatal. As you might expect, Eastern Equine Encephalitis usually affects livestock. It is much rarer in humans, and like West Nile, usually comes with only a few symptoms in the handful of people infected each year. However, some severe cases of EEEV suffer from sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting, that can lead to seizures or even a coma.
While it is by no means an exact science, traces of Triple-E infections have mostly been in the Northern part of the state, and West Nile has popped up more along our own Gulf Coast of Florida, from the panhandle all the way down into Charlotte County. Regardless of where you live in the state, though, the message is the same – make sure to take all necessary and appropriate precautions, including wearing long sleeved, protective clothing and utilizing effective mosquito repellent. Some of the counties are also increasing their mosquito control sprayings to minimize populations. Here at Good News Pest Solutions, we’re always looking for a better way.
